The SPED 2010 Annual General Business Meeting and Corporate Member Showcase (CMS) will be held October 28, 2010 at the Houston Marriott Energy Corridor. Sponsors are already lining up to participate in the CMS. The deadline to register for exhibiting at the Corporate Member Showcase is September 15, 2010.

 

In its 30th Anniversary Year, SPED is expecting to double the participation and attendance at the Corporate Member Showcase and Annual General Business Meeting held at the Houston Marriott Energy Corridor on the 10th floor overlooking Houston's west side. Starting at 8 A.M. a PPD Review for Level III, and Testing for Levels I and III will be conducted on the 10th floor by Dr. William G. Beazley. Following the Review and Test, a reception will be held beginning at 6 P.M. in appreciation for Level IV Certified Pipers who have participated in the PPD Advisory Committee. Southwest Design Services, Inc. will host the reception in the Lobby Level of the Houston Marriott Energy Corridor. The Corporate Member Showcase exhibits and reception will begin at 6:30 P.M. The Annual General Business Meeting will follow at 7:30 P.M.

 

Kathey Ferland, Project Manager, Texas Industries of the Future, Center for Energy and Environmental Resources, The University of Texas at Austin has agreed to present at the 30th Annual Meeting. Ms. Ferland will focus on "Achieving Superior Energy Performance via a Management System for Energy".

 

Thomas J. Van Laan, P.E., Senior Vice President, Intergraph, CADWorx & Analysis Solutions has agreed to speak at SPED's 2010 Annual General Business Meeting and Corporate Member Showcase November 4th at the Houston Marriott Energy Corridor. Mr. Van Laan has been extensively involved in the development of products such as CAESAR II, the world's leading pipe stress program, and CADWorx, a suite of AutoCAD-based plant and piping design software. With 28 years of engineering and software experience, Mr. Van Laan is considered to be an expert in the fields of pipe stress analysis and design, having taught over 75 training courses worldwide and having co-authored the engineering text Piping and Pipe Support Systems: Design and Engineering. Mr. Van Laan holds degrees in civil engineering, computer science and business administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York Institute of Technology and Pace University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in three states. We look forward to his presentation at SPED's Annual Meeting.

Blocks of tickets can be reserved for Corporate Members at the special rate of $15 each with a 10 ticket minimum. Individual tickets will go on sale in September.

Have you renewed your PPD Certification in 2010? Certification renewal is easy. Look on your PPD certificate for the date of certification. If it is one year from that date, it's time to renew. Just click on SPED Certification in the menu to the left. At the bottom of the certification information page, is a table of products you can purchase. The 3rd listing in the table is "Annual Renewal for All Levels". Use PayPal to renew your annual membership which is $90 USD. July 28th Open House for SPED Members

On Wednesday, July 28th, Ashtead Technologies and Texas Surveys will host an open house starting at 6 P.M. at Ashtead's Park Row office in Houston, Texas Surveys will present information on these topics: 1) Lazer Scanning: Data Capture Techniques and Correct Procedures 2) How to Plan and Manage a Lazer Scanning Project, 3) What to look for in a Lazer Scanning Service Provider, 4) An Overview of LFM Scanner and LFM Server. PPD Advisory Committee

Abstract: SPED PPD Advisory Committee members are exclusively drawn from pipers certified to

Professional Piping Designer (PPD) Level IV. The charter of this committee is to review the PPD program

content and advise SPED as to content, direction and qualifications. Members of this committee will be

given extraordinary access to PPD notes, questions, glossaries and other material used in PPD training

and assessment. They will be asked for feedback, comment, contributed material and other guidance for

the PPD Certification program.

Share and Win!

Each month this summer, SPED will award a prize to a SPED member or PPD certified piper

$100 for the best article about the Process Piping Industry submitted for publication in the SPED Update. The program begins in June 2010 and will continue through August 2010.

The goal of this program is to give a voice to SPED members and SPED certified pipers, and to encourage pipers to pass along their advice to others in the field. Winners will be recognized at the SPED Annual General Business Meeting in November.

  

Articles that are not selected may be published on www.spedweb.com or in the SPED Update. Once the winner is selected, the author will be notified by email, and may collect their $100 at the SPED office, or by U.S. Postal Service.

Rules of the Contest

  1. - Article must be approximately 500 words in length
  2. - Topic: piping trends, best practices or technical issues
  3. - Must be written by a SPED Member or PPD Certified Piper
  4. - Photos and illustrations are a bonus; submit each one in high resolution jpeg or tiff format
  5. - Must not be previously published
  6. - Cannot be copyrighted, or the copyrights must be transferred to SPED for publication
